| Overview |
Where accounts have been prepared outside BTCSoftware — for example in a third-party package or as a PDF — they can be attached to the CT return before submission. BTCSoftware supports two methods: attaching via Swap Mode (for iXBRL or PDF files), or attaching as a file attachment with the appropriate CT Options setting.
| Method 1 — Attach Accounts via Swap Mode (Recommended) |
This method is used when you have an iXBRL accounts file from a third-party package, or a PDF you want to attach in place of iXBRL accounts.
| ⚠ Important: For the Swap Mode option to appear, the accounts on the CT return must first be discarded. If accounts are currently linked to the return, discard them from the CT summary screen before proceeding. |
- Open the CT Return Summary screen in BTCSoftware.
- On the top toolbar, click Swap Mode. The toolbar options will change.
- Click Attach Accounts.
- Click Browse and navigate to your accounts file — this can be an iXBRL file (.html or .xml) or a PDF.
- Select Full Accounts and/or Filleted Accounts as appropriate and click OK to attach.
- Open the CT return and from the left-hand menu click CT Options.
- Select PDF Attached with explanation from the reason dropdown.
- Click Check and Generate iXBRL File — this will generate the iXBRL file successfully with the attached accounts.
| ✔ Tip: If you are attaching a third-party iXBRL file (not a PDF), select the iXBRL file in the browse step. BTCSoftware will attempt to import key figures from the iXBRL file into the CT computation — always review these after attaching. |
| Method 2 — Attach as a File Attachment |
This method adds the accounts as a file attachment on the CT summary screen without replacing the iXBRL generation workflow.
- On the CT Return Summary screen, locate the File Attachments section.
- Click Add Attachment and browse to your PDF accounts file.
- Select and attach the file.
- Open the CT return and from the left-hand menu click CT Options.
- Select Other — PDF Attached with explanation from the reason dropdown.
- Click Check and Generate iXBRL File — this will generate the iXBRL file successfully.

Q: The Swap Mode button is not appearing — what should I check?
A: Swap Mode only appears once any existing linked accounts have been discarded from the CT return. Discard the accounts from the CT summary screen and the Swap Mode option will appear.
Q: My third-party iXBRL file has attached but the CT figures have not imported — what should I do?
A: BTCSoftware attempts to import figures from third-party iXBRL files but cannot guarantee this for all formats. Review the CT computation manually and enter any figures that have not imported correctly.
