| Overview |
If a user in your firm cannot see the Submit to HMRC button on a Corporation Tax return, or receives an access error when trying to file, this is typically a filing permissions issue. BTCSoftware allows administrators to control which users can submit each type of return to HMRC.
| How to Enable CT Filing Permissions for a User |
You must have administrator access in BTCSoftware to change user permissions.
- Open BTCSoftware and go to the Tools or Administration menu.
- Select User Management or Manage Users.
- Find the user who is unable to file and click to edit their profile.
- Locate the Filing Permissions or Return Permissions section.
- Ensure Corporation Tax or CT600 is ticked.
- Click Save.
- Ask the user to log out of BTCSoftware and log back in for the change to take effect.
| ✔ Tip: While you are reviewing the user's permissions, check the other return types are also configured correctly for their role — Self Assessment, Partnership Returns, and Companies House filing can each be controlled separately. |
| Other Reasons a User Cannot File |
| Possible Cause | How to Check |
|---|---|
| Filing credentials not configured | Go to Tools > HMRC Filing Credentials and confirm CT agent credentials are entered |
| Return not through Check and Calculate | The Submit button may not appear until Check and Calculate has been run with no errors |
| Subscription does not include CT filing | Check your BTCSoftware licence includes Corporation Tax returns — contact support if uncertain |
| Return is in read-only mode | Ensure the user is in Edit mode — switch using the toggle in the bottom-left corner |
| 💬 Suggested Chatbot Answer |
| If a user cannot submit a CT600, the most likely cause is that Corporation Tax filing permission is not enabled for their account. An administrator can fix this in User Management > edit user > Filing Permissions > tick Corporation Tax. The user will need to log out and back in for the change to take effect. | Frequently Asked Questions |
Q: Can I restrict certain users to preparing returns but not submitting them?
A: Yes. This is exactly what the filing permissions control. Leave the CT600 filing permission unticked for users who should prepare but not submit — they will be able to complete the return but will not see the Submit to HMRC button.
Q: I am an administrator but I also cannot file — what should I check?
A: Check that your HMRC Corporation Tax agent credentials are correctly entered in the system. Even administrators cannot submit without valid credentials. Go to Tools > HMRC Filing Credentials to check.
Q: Do filing permission changes apply immediately?
A: The change is saved immediately but takes effect the next time the user logs in. Ask the user to log out and back in after you update their permissions.
