Overview
If a Self Assessment return has already been submitted to HMRC and needs to be corrected, BTCSoftware supports amended submissions directly to HMRC. The process differs depending on whether the original return was submitted via BTCSoftware or through a different system.
⚠ Important: HMRC accepts amended Self Assessment returns within 12 months of the 31 January filing deadline following the end of the tax year. For example, a 2024/25 return can be amended up to 31 January 2027. Amendments outside this window must be made by contacting HMRC directly.
If the Original Return Was Submitted via BTCSoftware
- Open the tax return in BTCSoftware.
- From the Summary screen, click Edit Record on the top toolbar.
- Make the required corrections to the return.
- Click Submit to HMRC.
- Follow the submission prompt — BTCSoftware will identify that a return has already been submitted and present the option to submit as an amended return.
- Confirm the amended submission.
If the Original Return Was NOT Submitted via BTCSoftware
If the original return was filed through HMRC's own system, a different software package, or by paper, follow these steps:
- Create a new tax return in BTCSoftware for the client and tax year.
- Complete the return with the corrected figures.
- On the Return Summary screen, click Submit to HMRC.
- In the submission dialogue box, tick the Enable Submit checkbox.
- Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and click Submit. This forces BTCSoftware to submit the return as an amended return to HMRC, even though no prior submission exists in BTCSoftware's records.
⚠ Important: The Shift + Submit method should only be used where the original return was genuinely submitted outside BTCSoftware. Using it on a return that was never filed will submit it as an amendment rather than an original, which may cause issues with HMRC's records.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I know if HMRC has accepted the amended return?
A: Check the Submission History on the tax return summary screen. A successful amended submission will show a Submitted status with an HMRC reference number.
Q: The amendment deadline has passed — what are my options?
A: Contact HMRC directly by phone or letter to discuss late amendment options. BTCSoftware cannot force HMRC to accept an amendment outside the standard window.
